Course outline: Intro D.I.T. Course: The Role of the D.I.T

With increased drama production in Scotland and with the majority of film productions and TV drama now being shot digitally there is an increasing demand for a trained Digital Imaging Technicans (D.I.T.) on productions.

A Digital Imaging Technician (D.I.T) is a relatively new role within the film industry and not everyone is clear about what a D.I.T does and how they fit within a film crew.

A D.I.T on a shoot is responsible for the technical set up of the camera and also the safe keeping and processing of the digital data created. He/she is also the on set bridge between production and post-production.

The course aims to take you through the D.I.T.'s duties on a typical Alexa ProRes shoot for editing on Avid, which is currently the most popular way to shoot Television Drama and Low Budget Features.

This one day course provides practical and professional training and is a great overview of the DIT job from a technical point of view.

After completing the course you should have gained enough knowledge to take your first steps into being a D.I.T.

Course details:
Introduction on the current role of the DIT on an Alexa shoot –

    Productions expectations of the D.I.T
    Posts expectations of the D.I.T
    The Camera department’s expectations of the D.I.T.

Theory - Brief introduction of the Arri Alexa.  The course will focus on a typical Prores/DNX workflow but will cover ARRIRAW.

Practical - Data Management: Selecting the appropriate storage medium for the job, liaising/etiquette with the Camera Assistants, Safely copying original camera data, time management

Practical - Quality Control: Procedures for analysing the technical quality of a shot - exposure, focus, noise, colour rendition, camera settings.  Writing QC documents.

Practical - Onset:  Working with the DoP - etiquette, live image manipulation,  technical assistance.

Practical - Dailies Creation: Transcoding and Grading with Davinci Resolve, Importing into Avid, Audio Synching in Avid.  Handing over the rushes. Backing up to LTO5.

The course is very practical but a certain amount of 'homework' will be expected afterwards.  The tutor will provide notes to go with the course and internet links of where to find further information on some of the terms and procedures covered. 

Tutor
Grant McPhee has worked as a Camera Assistant in Scotland for over 10 years and is firmly rooted in film where he was a camera assistant working on mainly 35mm productions. However, in early 2008, he was focus puller on the first RED shoot in Scotland (short film Night School, shot by Robbie Ryan)   and rom that moment on he has embraced new digital camera formats and for the past 3 years has worked mainly with these new digital cameras as an assistant while self teaching himself to become a DIT, which he works as today.  He's worked on over 20 feature films including World War Z, Cloud Atlas and Under The Skin most recently and TV dramas such as Doors Open and Case Histories.

Who's it for
This course is designed primarily for camera crew -particularly ACs and data wranglers-and assistant editors who are interested in becoming a D.I.T. However, production managers, editors, producers, directors who want to expand their knowledge of the role of the D.I.T.

Prerequisites
The course is aimed at freelancers with minimal or no experience of using the ARRI Alexa camera. However, a certain level of understanding tapeless formats is required.  To gain maximum benefit from this training you'll need to have a basic knowledge of the Mac operating system, high definition video cameras, non-linear editing and moving-image production workflow.

After completing the course you should have gained enough knowledge to take your first steps into being a D.I.T.
