Screen Academy Scotland were delighted to host the Short Com Industry Day on August 15th.  In association with Creative Media Network and Cinetopia, Short Com was at our Merchiston Avenue production centre to deliver a day of master classes with indusry professionals. The Industry Day was aimed at emerging talent (directors, writers, actors and producers) wanting to make a career in comedy and also intended to bring together like minded people and encourage collaboration. The event was attended by over 30 Short Com delegates and Screen Academy students and graduates.

The day started with BAFTA nominated director Ben Mallaby who presented a masterclass in comedy film directing. He shared his experiences, knowledge and tips on how to make your short as funny as possible. Following Ben was BAFTA award winning Morag McKinnon the much lauded director of Home, and Donkeys who was in conversation with Producer Lili Sandelin about her career to date. After lunch Producer Carolyne Sinclair Kidd spoke with Louise Thornton from BBC The Social about opportunities through the Scottish Film Talent Network and BBC The Social. Stuart Laws, comedian and filmmaker spoke to Cinetopia’s Amanda Rogers about his experience setting up Turtle Canyon based in Pinewood Studios.

The day concluded with wine and soft drinks in the Screen Academy Gathering area. Many thanks to Chris Aitken from Short Com, Screen Academy’s Kay Sheridan as well as the team from Cinetopia for making this a great day!
