Screen Academy Scotland, Edinburgh Napier MFA Advanced Film Practice graduate Alkisti Terzi has just started the three month Listhús Artist Residency Program in Iceland. The Listhus residency hosts up to 8 artists for residencies from 1-6months.
Alkistis will be working on a documentary film called ‘Light in the Darkness” exploring how people in Ólafsfjörður respond to the artists of Skammdegi. Through befriending people, visiting their homes, eating dinner with families and spending time with them at work the artists will build up a picture of daily life and of people’s attitudes towards the dark winter. Issues around community, friendship and family, mental health and people’s relationships to nature will be explored.
The burning questions at the heart of Alkistis’ piece are:
- How do people light up their own and each others lives in the absence of the Sun? Are there any victims in the darkness?
- They hope to find out what sort or people deal best with Skammdegi and through that ask if there are any larger lessons for us as a global community as we continue to face our own collective and individual alienation from nature.
