Waving Kites: Hong Kong Diaspora Film Screenings – Edinburgh | Supported by BFI Screen Heritage Fund
The School of Arts & Creative Industries at Edinburgh Napier University is proud to host a series of screenings from the Waving Kites: Hong Kong Diaspora Cinema UK Tour, showcasing independent Hong Kong cinema and exploring migration, identity, and diasporic experience this spring in Edinburgh.
The tour, running across London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Sheffield, and Newcastle from April to May 2026, explores Hongkonger diasporic experiences across diverse moments and places. It is part of a wider project on Hong Kong independent cinema led by the Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA) at Newcastle University, curated with support from the BFI Screen Heritage Fund (National Lottery funding). Showcasing CIFA’s newly acquired Hong Kong film collection, the programme features thirteen screenings accompanied by post-screening Q&As or panel discussions, presented in art-house and independent cinemas, community venues, and university campuses across the UK.
The films trace a range of perspectives — from hope to disillusionment, separation and exploration, the struggle to settle, and reflections shaped by global capitalism and xenophobia. They attend not only to those who have left Hong Kong, but also to those who remain, exploring how migration can open paths to self-understanding. Together, the screenings span diasporic experiences from the 1980s to recent waves of emigration, moving between Hong Kong, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
These events offer a unique opportunity to engage with filmmakers and scholars through post-screening discussions and networking, highlighting Edinburgh Napier University’s commitment to film culture, research, and creative collaboration.
