The editing teaching was great! Being taught by industry professionals really made the course that much better as it was taught through lived experience and not just things we are told to believe. Susan Brand was a fantastic teacher in that respect as she always took the time to explain reasoning and story. Learning the industry standard of AVID Media Composer, and being able to get the certification was a great stepping stone for standing out when applying to industry jobs!

What did you appreciate most about the MA Film with Editing at Napier Uni?

Our lessons had a mix of the technical side of editing where we learnt AVID and then also a storytelling element, which I think was a really intuitive way to learn.

How has the editing teaching enhanced your work profile?

Whilst learning the technical elements was important, it was especially good being able to discuss and learn about the ways we tell stories within that, as it meant we could put both very important elements into our work!

What was the atmosphere like in Susan’s classroom?

The editing course at Napier was exhilarating, engaging and overall a joy to be a part of.

Has it changed how you see editing in any way?

I never really ever felt alone in post-production and always had people to turn to and bounce ideas off. It’s clear to me that the collaborative nature of study at Edinburgh Napier, having other student specialists to work with, makes the films all the better. Now I am able to see editing as a group effort.

What did you think of the editing teaching and what did it consist of?

We were able to ask individualist questions pertaining to our specialism and we’d get really in depth

answers that helped us grow even more. Susan never made it feel like there was a right answer in the story driven elements. This meant that we could really experiment with things and feel the story develop more naturally.
