Taking Care to the Big Screen: Edinburgh Napier Film Graduates Find Success

A short film about the intertwining fortunes of two carers, “Care,” is gaining recognition on the festival circuit after starting as a final year project at Edinburgh Napier University. It tells the story of a young Polish immigrant and an experienced Scottish lady who connect while working for a private care company, drawing from writer and director Jagoda Tłok’s experiences as a care worker during the pandemic.

Jagoda collaborated with producer Jess Kelly to create the film, highlighting the challenges of the caregiving system while emphasizing shared human connections. Crowdfunded and shot in just over five days in Edinburgh, the film has been featured at several festivals, including the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and has won Best Overall Film at the NAHEMI National Student Awards.

“Care” won the RTS Scotland Student Television Award and also received the Audience Award at the Glasgow Short Film Festival. Both Jagoda and Jess express gratitude for the unexpected recognition and momentum the film has generated.

With their success, the duo is looking ahead to their next project, “Code of Conduct,” which explores workplace ethics in a corporate setting. They credit their time at ENU for helping them discover their filmmaking passions. “Care” continues to be showcased at various film festivals, paving the way for future opportunities.
