Great news that two Screen Academy Scotland/ECA graduates have won awards at Riverrun International Film Festival 2018 in North Carolina.

Time Trial, Directed by Finlay Pretsell, edited by Screen Academy Scotland/ECA graduate Kieran Gosney (MA Film and TV) and shot by fellow graduates Martin Radich (MFA Film Directing) and Julian Schwanitz (MFA Film Directing) won Best Editing in the Documentaries Feature Competition. Time Trial is an immersive film using innovative techniques to capture the essence of professional cycling. It premiered at IDFA, and was nominated at several international film festivals including Cleveland international (USA) River Run, (USA), SXSW (USA), Sofia International Film Festival, Munich. Time Trial had its UK premiere at Sheff/Doc.

Jury Statement about Time Trial: “With precise and commanding technique, the editors take us on a ride into the middle of a sporting event most of us never watch or even understand… and into the experience of a rider on the ride of his life.”

Also in the Documentaries Feature Competition, Julian Schwanitz (MFA Film Directing) won Best Cinematography for Donkeyote.

Jury Statement:  “Lush, grounded, and patient. These words best describe the cinematography of Julian Schwanitz in Donkeyote. His gorgeous renderings of Southern Spain, his crisp capturing of sound, and the intimacy in which he portrays the film’s two main characters – Manolo, and his donkey, Gorrión, provide a tenderness and poetry that help this film soar.”

RiverRun’s 2018 Documentary Features Competition jurors included: K. Austin Collins, Tom Haneke, Sierra Pettengill and Stan Wright.
