Derek lectures in Film & TV, specialising in multi-camera studio & outside broadcast, TV documentary and entertainment and factual outputs. He tutors in location sound for film for all year groups including MA film. His teaching accentuates professional practice. His near 40 years in broadcast was spent at the BBC where he started as a location sound assistant, graduating to post-production as a dubbing mixer where he was nominated in
sound categories for BAFTA and RTS awards. Moving into production, Derek produced and directed output across the widest range of genres, including network factual series, childrens’ live entertainment programmes, sport and news and current affairs. His career highlights include producing and directing Balamory for CBBC, directing sequences for the 2012 London Olympic Opening ceremony and his work as a freeelance Series Director on multiple series for the Discovery channel.
