Dr Séan Martin

Seán Martin’s films include documentaries, feature films and experimental work. Two of his films on Andrei Tarkovsky (Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev: A Journey, and The Dream in the Mirror) – co-directed with Louise Milne, both part of an ongoing series on Tarkovsky, www.tarkovskycinemaofdreams.com – were released by Criterion; Lanterna Magicka: Bill Douglas & the Secret History of Cinema was released by the BFI. His PhD documentary A Vast Shadow House, explored the work of the Scottish metaphysical fantasy author David Lindsay, best known for the novel A Voyage to Arcturus.

 

Seán is also a bestselling author of popular non-fiction, including The Knights Templar: The History and Myths of the Legendary Military Order, and The Cathars: The Rise and Fall of the Great Heresy. He has appeared in a number of TV programmes, including The Secret Story of the Knights Templar (CNC/ZDF) and AMC’s Cursed Films II: Tarkovsky’s Stalker. Also a poet, Seán won the Wigtown Poetry Prize in 2011, and his first collection of poems, The Girl Who Got onto the Ferry in Citizen Kane, appeared from Templar Poetry in 2018.

 

Seán is developing a number of new projects – features, documentaries and experimental – and teaches drama and documentary at Napier.
